The exams are now over so now I just have to play the waiting game until the results are released in three weeks' time. They weren't too painful, but there was at least one part on two of the four papers I couldn't do. The Natural Language Processing one in particular was quite hard and the lecturer certainly wasn't kidding when he said time would be at a premium - I think 3 hours of that is quite enough for one lifetime!

Anyway, officially I have a week off until I start again with courses next Thursday, but I'll have to go into Uni before then for meetings and advisory lectures for the Honours' Project. I'm actually quite looking forward to both, particularly the Professional Topics in Computing as it's based more on current social issues than actual practical work.

I've made up my mind about the other stuff I posted a week ago and have decided just to let things play out and take it as it goes. There's no logic to worrying about what might or might not happen.

I've finally decided to get round to answering the letters from Pitney Bowes, who are still hounding me for payment despite their cock-up with the franking machine last May. I've already written to them once stating my dissatisfaction but they haven't responded and instead sent another invoice through with another late payment charge. I'll write again tomorrow and hope they will actually read my letter this time. You'd think they would if they want their money that badly. I'm also drafting a Letter Before Action threatening court action against The Mobile Outlet for a breech of contract regarding the cashback for my T-Mobile phone package. They should have sent the initial payment by 22 December but have clearly defaulted on this. I am fairly certain of a win here judging by the results of the hundreds of people before me who've had a similar problem with this company, although it will probably have to go before a judge in order for TMO to take it seriously. There were murmurs that I may have to attend in person if it gets that far but hopefully this won't be necessary, as the case is exactly the same as all the others. Finally, I'll be settling the balance with PC World (Now DSG Retail) for 60 GBP for the 8GB USB pen I bought last year and also re-issuing a cheque to the rifle club for my annual membership, due to the previous treasurer having failed to cash my first one.

I got back in contact with a few people from the Mauisun forum I last chatted with 2 years ago, and also with some guys from NCW I last spoke with in 2002. That was interesting and brought back some fond (and some not so fond) memories. Geez, just writing that seems strange but it certainly made for quite a lot of stuff to talk about.

OK, I'm tired after a late night celebrating the end of exams yesterday, so I'll call it quits here. Have a great weekend everyone and take care.
10th-Dec-2007 02:44 pm - Landline Kaput - Diverted Calls Note
Hi,

Just a quick note for those of you calling my UK landline number (or 0870 number diverted to my landline) that due to a fault currently under investigation all calls are being diverted to my cell phone. There is no additional charge for you, the caller. There is also, supposedly, no charge to me either for the diverted portion of the call whilst the fault remains unresolved. However, to assist me should problems arise, please could you let me know when I answer if you used my landline number so I can take note of this for when the phone bill arrives. The fault should hopefully be acknowledged and a solution proposed within 72 hours. Thanks.

P.S. My internet connection is now subject to unannounced interruption during times of, I am assured, testing by the engineers. For the last two days this seems to have been mainly between 16:00 and 18:00 GMT. Just a warning if I should suddenly disappear without trace in the middle of a chat or voip call. Thanks.

UPDATE Thursday 13 December: The landline is now fixed and will receive calls until it's disconnected during my room's makeover.
More info on the problem and the fix )
Please note: I am not, and never have been a qualified lawyer, so any legal issues you may encounter whilst using the following information are not my responsibility. That having been said...

A lot of cell phone network operators are now offering add-ons to help spice up your phone. These include ringtones, realtones (full mp3 versions of tracks) and so forth. This is great, but most of these incur charges which are often outlandishly high (for a 30 second mp3 clip is one example). It's also the case that many of the tunes which people want to add to their phone are their favourites, and ones which they already have full versions of, either on CD or as mp3's on their computers or iPods.

IHowever, you can get the same effects without the charges using some freely available software and your own tracks. And the advantage of this is that you can have whichever part of the track you want, for as long as you want, and you can change it every day if you wish without cost.

Here's how... )

Comments are welcome, and do let me know how you get on. Remember that just because the track is being played on a cell phone doesn't mean that copyright laws do not apply. You should therefore ensure that you own rights to, or have permission to manipulate the files that you are using. But I'll leave that part up to your own judgement, :)
9th-Nov-2007 07:46 pm - An up and down kinda fortnight
The last couple of weeks have been a bit topsy turvy and it's getting hard to just keep up with everything from one day to the next.

Everything was going reasonably well, but then my notetaker who's been a constant presence with me for the last four years found better paid employment elsewhere. This came to light on Friday with her new job starting the following Monday. To top it off my usual Student Support officer only works half days on Friday. Luckily, one of my classmates, Jeananne was happy to guide me around which I very much appreciate. I do wish Kath all the best for the future, and am pleased that she'll at least have a little less stress to deal with day to day, but it's been mighty weird her not being there. Student Support have been trying to get something more 'permanent' sorted out, but with 3+ parties involved and the delay in messages being sent and responded to, it's all rather up in the air with things changing randomly at short notice, or at least that's how it seems to me. The lecturing staffs has all been very helpful though, even simple things like helping me find my name on the attendance monitoring sheet so I can sign in, and they have my profuse thanks.

Then there was the issue of choosing my Honours Project which I'll work on next session, and finding staff mentors that I a) could get along with, b) were doing something that I am interested in and c) that I could actually do and get good marks with. This involved meeting different staff at different times, as well as actually having to submit a list of preferred staff in order of preference. At one point I was going to do a self-proposed project, but I've decided against it now, and just to cap it all I might be doing a project that forms part of external research collaboration. If you're now totally confused about what I'm talking about, have a look here.

This week was messed up from the outset. I accidentally overdosed on the Amitriptyline tablets last Saturday, which didn't seem to affect me adversely immediately after (I called NHS 24 to check this) but I later felt really drowsy, and by Sunday was sore all over with a pounding headache. Got to hospital, had a shot of morphine and a stay there for a few hours. I was hurting in places I didn't even know existed on Monday and Tuesday and was only really feeling back to rights by Wednesday. I've missed valuable work time and it's generally thrown my whole schedule out of kilter.

On the plus side though I bought TALKS Premium for my phone from TalkNav on 25 October. I got the license code sent to me within 30 seconds of the purchase and it was registered via SMS a few minutes later and is now working great. I'm really glad I can finally make full and absolute use of my T-Mobile data package.

Other than that not much else has happened that's all that good to talk about. I did go shooting twice since my last post, and have been trying out some new breathing and movement techniques that's resulting in my 10's being closer to the bull centre with smaller groupings as well, which is good. They also managed to move the date for the British Nationals competition to Mid March, so I should be able to attend, if not the Scottish tournament in January as well.

All for now I guess, Cheers and take care, especially with the darker mornings and evenings now that the clocks have gone back. H.
An all too common request given along with other safety information by airlines to their passengers on board their flights. But what is the 'real' reason behind it?

I was searching for something on Google yesterday when I became sidetracked by a discussion on this topic. And I have to say I was surprised at the sheer number of, and pardon the phrase, 'Old Wives' Tales' on the matter and the lack of any real knowledge. Indeed, ask most people why they think they are asked to switch off their cell phones on aircraft and they'll probably reply with something about the plane not falling out of the sky, which admittedly is a valid concern, but in my opinion not nearly to the extent that many people make it out to be.

So what's it all about? )

This poses some very interesting questions. With cell phone technology advancing, and the number of things that can be done on a cell phone without requiring network reception increasing, and the ability to turn off the antenna when desired, maybe we should now drop old-fashioned concerns and give technology a chance? And one last tthing, the fact that the 'phone' part of the device wouldn't function anyway rather blows the objection of 450 people yammering at once out of the preverbial window.
